How to Take Care of Live Edge Wood

Furniture made from live edge wood may experience changes over time. But, these changes are normal, given the characteristics of natural wood slabs.

Some live edge wood furniture may develop cracks, change in color or have dips and curves. Fills of epoxy and resin are also altered over time. That is because any solid organic wood adjusts to its surroundings, especially temperature and humidity.

Sound like too much? Don’t let these issues deter you from enjoying live edge wood furniture. Live edge woods are easily maintained and cared for if you have a trick or two up your sleeve.

Check Humidity Levels

The changing seasons also bring a change in humidity levels. Always check the humidity level inside your home and ensure it stays between 45% and 55%. Sudden changes in humidity (as well as temperature) can result in cracks or splits.

Stain and Waterproof It

Sealing is a must for live edge wood slabs. This precautionary measure keeps the surface spot-free and clean all the time. However, sealing coats do not last a lifetime. You must re-seal the furniture once or twice a year to ensure the protective coating works appropriately.

Only Use Clean Microfiber Towels

Microfiber towels are soft and absorbent. Thus, they are less likely to scratch the surface of the wood slabs. It absorbs more moisture compared to other towels, which limits the wiping time to a minimum.

Keep It Away From Sunlight

Sunlight is as harmful to wood furniture as it is to humans. Direct exposure to the sun can alter the wood’s natural color and lead to warping and cracking. Thus, make sure to keep it away from windows and the outdoors as much as you can. Some types of wood are okay for outdoor use, but research or ask questions to be sure.

Use Natural Cleaning Products

Chemicals are not great for any type of wood. Thus, it is best to only use natural products on natural wood. The most common natural wood cleaner many abide by is vinegar diluted in equal parts water.

Protect It

Aside from protecting live edge wood slabs from the sun, you must also protect them from indoor elements. Use placemats, coasters, and hot pads whenever necessary to protect the natural edge slab from heat, scratches, and other possible damage.

Wipe Spills Immediately

Wiping is a vital care procedure, yet also the most underrated one. Spills are often neglected until they evaporate or are absorbed by the wood. If the wood slab has a protective coating, it can still leave marks if the stain is left for a long period.

Condition the Wood

Polishing helps the wood last longer and look better. Use a conditioning cream when polishing to reduce minor scratches and leave the surface sparkling, but use extra caution when polishing, and do not let any cream get into the wood through cracks and holes. Doing so will lead to dirty buildup over time.
